Adventures in Taranaki and Tongariro
On your next adventure trip to New Zealand consider the Taranaki and Tongariro region on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. A few of the adventure possibilities are:-
Climbing Mount Taranaki
Mount Taranaki is in the Egmont National Park, 25km south of New Plymouth. For experienced trampers it is a one day tramp. The huge volcanic cone of Mount Taranaki/Egmont erupted millions of tonnes of volcanic debris onto the surrounding plains. At present it dramatically influences the weather and is a magnet to trampers, climbers and skiers.
Tramping Around Mount Taranaki
The Egmont National Park offers this 3 or 4 day tramp best suited for intermediate trampers. There are several excellent tramping trips around the volcanic cone of Mt Taranaki. Circumnavigate the mountian on low level tracks through totara and kamahi forests or follow shorter high level tracks through goblin forest and alpine vegetation.
Whanganui River Canoeing
Whanganui National Park is where you will find the Whanganui River to have a go at a 4 day (guide optional) adventure suitable for beginner paddlers. This is one of New Zealand's best canoe touring trips, through an area rich in Maori and European history. There are many unforgettable sights and sounds on this old river route from the central North Island to the coast. The Whanganui is a large river with dozens of grade I to II rapids, carving its way through rugged bushclad hill country.
